As I was watching many youtube videos about the different ways to build a campfire I came across something called a Swedish Fire Log. Some also call it a Swedish Fire Torch and even a Canadian Candle. This type of campfire is so easy to build that pretty much anyone can achieve this type of fire. In this article, I will talk about how to make a Swedish Fire Log. I will also talk about how to make a Swedish Fire Log without a chainsaw because let’s face it, most of us probably won’t carry a chainsaw with us while hiking in the deep wood.
Swedish Fire Torch History
Before I dive into how to make a Swedish Fire Log I wanted to find out what was the actual Swedish Fire Log history. The Swedish Torch (Schwedenfackel) is an amazing pre-technological invention that has helped many people survive by radiating a great amount of heat and also using it as a stovetop for cooking food. A Swedish fire torch produces an efficient burn compared to traditional campfires.
Many consider its name comes during the 30 Year War, which began in 1618 and raged on till 1648. Throughout the war, firewood was challenging to find and hard to haul. It made sense that the soldiers were searching for strategies to conserve timber.
How To Make A Swedish Fire Torch
To get a self-contained interior fire with a built-in stovetop, the Swedish Fire Torch cannot be defeated. All you will need is one log along with a chainsaw.
The attractiveness of the torch is that as soon as you light it, you can virtually forget it. The log will gradually burn off the inside out. The cuts throughout the log supply natural air flow which will keep your flame ventilated.
Ensure at least one end of this log is cut flat so that it is going to stand up directly on its own end. Take your chainsaw to make three crisscrossing cuts around 3/4 of the way through.
It is possible to begin your torch when lighting a small fire on top that will eventually burn into the log. Kerosene or lighter fluid placed in the middle of this log will even help get it moving.

How To Make A Canadian Candle?
Just in case you didn’t already know, a Canadian Candle is the same thing as a Swedish Fire Torch. I looked online, and I couldnt find any information as to where the name “Canadian Candle” came from. I also was wondering if it has the same origin story as the Sweedish Fire Log.

Swedish Fire Log Without A Chainsaw
You don’t necessarily need a chainsaw to make a Swedish Fire Log, an Axe or hand saw will do just fine. My favorite and by far the easiest way to build this type of fire is to split the log into two criss-cross leading to four equal size peace. Now you will need to slice about an inch from top to bottom on each piece of wood on the interior giving space in the middle for some tinder. When placing the four parts of the log back together, you will now have a hole in the middle to fill with kindling.
Grab some twigs to make a rope to hold the Swedish Fire Log together. What I like to use best is an uncoiled metal coat hanger. By using a metal coat hanger, you will prevent whats holding the fire log together when burning.

Advantages of a Swedish Fire Torch
When there is an infinite number of ways of making a campfire, the Fire Log provides some distinct benefits, particularly for cooking.

The thing that many of these people are missing is that it takes more than wearing a gray hoody and keeping your head down if they want to be a grey man. It’s all about blending into a crowd or a specific area. I’m certainly no expert on the gray man concept, but I did do a lot of research on it, and this is what I found. Before we dive into our list of gray man skills, I’m going to go over what exactly is the gray man concept quickly. The gray man concept is a way for you to blend into your surroundings. A significant amount of this is going to depend on the baseline movement.
The “baseline movement” as the guy from “BlackScoutSurvival.com” explains blending into any crowd or environment. He explains that the baseline changes all the time, from day to night can be different baselines.

List of the Best Gray Man Skills to Learn to Blend In
1- Walk, Don’t Run In an Urban Environment
This gray man skill of walking and not running is apparent. If you’re walking on a downtown street, would you notice a person running more than a person that is walking at the same pace as everyone else? Of course, the answer would be that you’re going to notice the person that is running, everyone will see him or her.
When you’re in an urban setting, you need to slow down. One thing you could do to avoid being noticed is strolling with your cell phone since it gives you something to focus. And of course you would be blending in quite well since everyone around you would most likely also be looking down at their cell phones and not watch where they’re going and whose around them. Just try not to get hit by a car!
If you believe that someone is following you, you can slow down and make as though you’re reading or watching something on your phone. What you’re really doing is looking around at your surroundings and making sure you have an exit plan.
2- Look Non-Tactical
If you have the means to defend yourself and enter into a combat situation, it would be prudent not to be tactically decked out. Looking even the slightest tactical gives you away and makes you stand out. This applies if there is an SHTF disaster that happens and you’re now in a post-apocalyptic world. You don’t want to appear threatening to anyone.
You can still be bulletproof without wearing a bulletproof vest. I was reading an article the other day about a new type of bulletproof backpack. The backpack looks just like any ordinary black or pink backpack. The people who made this bullet proof backpack primarily built it for kids to have in school for protection in case there’s the unfortunate event of a school shooting.
Just try to wear things that don’t make you look like someone coming out of a swat team truck, and you should be fine.
3- The Skill of Not Creating Any Stimulus In Anyone
Try your best not to create any stimulus in anyone when they see you. What I mean by that is try not to wear something that seems out of place or that is too bright. You don’t want to have something on you that someone will see and immediately associate with something they remember. If they remember what they associated you with they will most definitely remember you also.
It’s not always easy to not create stimulus in someone when they see you walking down a street, but if you blend in as best as you can, you should be fine. Also, don’t wear any identifying logos that someone could point out with either like or dislike because they will probably remember the emblem after they see you. For example, if you wear a red Boston Red Socks hat, a Yankey fan would undoubtedly notice you. On the other side of the coin, if someone is a Red Socks fan, seeing your hat might very well strike up a conversation. Mission Failed!
4- Be In Character
Some will say that the only way to become a grey man is to adopt the lifestyle and become a gray man exclusively. I would disagree with that because how boring would life be if you’re in a constant state of camouflage? The best way I would suggest in becoming a gray man is for that to be a character you play. A disguise you have that you can use if you need to move around undetected.
I find it easier to stay in character when you have a specific disguise for the task you’re going to take on. Only wear that disguise when you’re going to be in your gray man character.
5- Don’t Make Yourself Look Weak
Making yourself look strong and aggressive might put a target on your back but looking weak will put an even more significant mark on you. Try not to look like you could be an easy target for someone to attack and rob you of your belongings. During hurricane Katrina, there were a lot of people that were robbed while bugging out because it was obvious they had their most valuable items with them to bring to their next location.
6- Learn How to Keep Quiet
One skill you need to learn to become a gray man is to be quiet about all of your bug out or bug in plans. Never share that information with people that you wouldn’t want around you if disaster strikes. You do not want the entire neighborhood going into your emergency shelter or your bug out location.
Keeping this information from your children is also not a bad idea. You might trust your children with your life, but kids can be erratic at the best of times. You never know what they will divulge to their best friends. The risk is too significant to be talking about how smart you are to be preparing for a possible SHTF situation. Prepare your kids for such events, but there is no need to tell them everything before there is a disaster situation.
7- At Home Gray Man Skills
There are many gray man skills you can adopt right in your own home. One gray man tip I would tell you is to be discreet when buying large, expensive items. People notice those kinds of things when big boxes are sitting in the trash pile showing everyone your latest purchases.
Bring the boxes to a recycling bin, so no one knows it was for you. If you’re having the items shipped to your home and you don’t want anyone to see that you’re regularly buying things for prepping purposes you should have it delivered somewhere else. A private mailbox that is away from your home could be an option. You can also have it shipped to your work and act as if it’s something work-related if possible.
You should also cut off your address and information labels from the boxes you receive by mail so no one can trace it back to your home. This might sound like paranoia, but the reality is that a good number of people are inherently jealous and nosey.
8- Be Aware of the Noise You Make
People usually overlook the category of scent and noise as determining factors of drawing attention to themselves. You can easily give away your location when making unnecessary noise; which can cause anyone around to notice you and make a note of your presence.
Try not to wear items that make a high pitch noise while walking. A keychain would be the best example of this scenario. There are certain types of keychains you can buy that makes no noise whatsoever; they are designed for this type of situation. You can find them on Amazon by merely searching for a quiet keychain.
9 – Keep your Scent Under Control
There are certain popular scents of cologne and perfumes that could trigger memories of the past in some people. If this happens they would certainly notice and remember you. Cologne and perfume are quickly going out of style anyway, so this would indeed not be something too complicated to give up.
You can also buy scent free underarm deodorant and body wash that would make you virtually invisible scent wise. Don’t forget about aftershave; you can also buy those with a scent free option.
10- Gray Man Concept in Personal Security
Situational Awareness is critical when it comes to the gray man concept in personal security. The skill of situational awareness should be developed and utilized when you’re in tune with your environment.
This skill is not just recognizing the fact that there are buildings around you, but determining whether the premises are likely to be unoccupied or inhabited. Take notice of things such as available points of entry and exit of each building in case someone is following you.

11- Not Too Fast, Not Too Slow
If you’re traveling to a location where there is a significant number of people around, you should not walk too fast or too slow because people will notice you. You also don’t want to walk beside the same person for any amount of time, this can be avoided by walking just slightly slower than the crowd.
All of this helps take the focus off you in a crowded area, but you will need to use your situational awareness if you’re in a desolate area.
12 – Pretending Like You’re Suppose To Be There
Pretending like you’re supposed to be in an area will limit the number of people noticing your presence. If you look like a tourist, you might be opening yourself to a potential mugging or worst, a kidnapping. Acting and thinking like a local will make it, so you don’t look out of place.
The gray man skill of pretending like you’re supposed to be there can be done by adjusting your clothing and grooming style, so it coincides with the people in the area. There is no need to panic if you’re a visible minority. All you need to do if you don’t “look” like the locals are adopt the behavior and customs of the society.
Walk with your shoulders back and appear confident and comfortable and no one should suspect a thing.
13 – The Gray Man Skill of Strategic Avoidance
One of the most critical gray man skill is strategic avoidance. What this means is not to put yourself in unnecessary danger. Avoid putting yourself in the path of confrontation with an unknown person.
You should always stay on the safer, well-lit routes when possible. You might have to take a slightly longer route, but it is much safer staying among a crowd versus taking shortcuts. Try to avoid being alone in an unknown and possibly dangerous area.
Becoming a gray man is not a skill you learn in a short period. Learning some gray man skills takes time and determination. If you live in a world where you fear being followed or if you end up in a post SHTF world then becoming a gray man could become a top priority.

The process of how to make natural homemade deodorant will take very few ingredients. The primary ingredients I use to make homemade deodorant is beeswax, coconut oil, baking soda, and cornstarch or arrowroot powder. Mix them together and pour it into an empty bottle of deodorant and voila!

The number one reason I’m making my DIY deodorant is that I want to minimize the hazardous toxins that enter my body, like aluminum. Many toxins enter our body that we have little to no control over, but something like deodorant is something that we can all quickly change.
There’s also a second reason why it would be beneficial to learn how to make your DIY deodorant. If there’s a disaster and we no longer have the luxury of going to the store to buy the things we all take for granted?
One significant factor to note when changing over to an all natural or homemade deodorant is that not everyone will have the same results. The DIY deodorant that works best for me might not work so good for you.
That’s the reason I’ve included my favorite homemade deodorant recipe as number one and then added a few more popular methods. Try a couple of these recipes out and let me know which one you like best.

1 – Best Homemade Deodorant For Men and Woman
5 This one is my favorite DIY deodorant recipe because it looks and feels exactly like something you would buy at the store.
Once the water is boiling, place the bowl of beeswax onto the water to make it float so the wax can melt nicely. There are two reasons that beeswax is an excellent ingredient for deodorant. First, it does a great job of holding the homemade deodorant together. The second reason is that it will also leave a protective coating on your skin to help you stop sweating. Melt the coconut oil; you can use the double boiler mether or the microwave.
Carefully take the bowl of beeswax out of the boiling water and let it cool off for a couple of minutes.
After the beeswax has a few minutes to cool down, you will then pour the liquefied coconut oil into the bowl of melted wax.
Add 1 tsp of arrowroot (for sensitive skin) or cornstarch and 1 Tbsp of baking soda and mix it all with the beeswax and coconut oil. Stir it up until its creamy.
Now grab an empty sterile bottle of deodorant (Amazon Link) and pour the mixture all the way to the top of the deodorant bottle. You can leave it on the counter to cool off, but you can also place the full bottle of deodorant in the refrigerator to speed up the solidifying process. I always set it in the fridge until the next day.
I always store my homemade deodorant in an empty deodorant bottle. You can also use a small glass jar to store this in and use two fingers to apply under your arms comfortably. I’m sure you’ll figure it out.
This homemade deodorant is by far the recipe that works best for me! The video below is where I found this recipe. The guy in the video is a bit eccentric but does a good job at explaining what should be done.
What I like about this recipe is that it’s impossible to mix up these measurements and ruin a batch.
First, you will need a medium-size bowl to mix the baking soda and the arrowroot.
Now mix the coconut oil with the baking soda and arrowroot. I find it easy to mash it all together using a fork. It certainly won’t blend as well as if the coconut oil was already melted, but you’ll get the hang of it.
As you’re mixing this you will probably think that you need more coconut oil, but you don’t, keep stirring and mixing until it begins to pack together into a paste.
You can either pack the deodorant into an empty deodorant bottle or a small glass jar.
3 – Homemade Deodorant with Shea Butter
This is my wife’s favorite deodorant recipe. The reason for that is because it includes shea butter as a prime ingredient. Shea butter adds a degree of softness to the deodorant.
Begin by melting 2 tablespoons of shea butter and 3 tablespoons of coconut oil. These two ingredients melt relatively easy. All you need to do is use the double boiler method or the microwave.
The second step is to stir the shea butter and coconut oil together while adding 3 tablespoons of baking soda. Then blend in 2 tablespoons of arrowroot or organic cornstarch.
Mix well until you have a consistent liquid then pour it into an empty deodorant bottle and leave it in the refrigerator to solidify. This recipe lacks beeswax, so if you live in a warm climate, you may want to leave the stick of deodorant in the fridge after each use, so it doesn’t melt. Otherwise, you can pour the content into a small glass jar.
Patchouli (3 drops), and either lemongrass or lime(3 drops) per quarter-cup spray bottle
½ tsp colloidal silver per quarter cup spray bottle, optional
The first step is to gather a ¼ cup of fresh sage leaves, ¼ cup of fresh thyme leaves, ¼ cup of lavender buds and lime or lemon peels; And place all of these ingredients into a small glass jar.
Pour 1 ¼ cup of 80 proof vodka over your ingredients in the glass jar and seal.
Give the jar good shake each day for one month. After 30 days, strain the liquid from the glass jar into a small spray bottle.
Add the essential oils and colloidal silver and shake the spray bottle for about a minute. Depending on the size of your spray bottle, you might still have some mixture left in your glass jar. If that’s the case, reseal and use it for next time.
Give the spray bottle a good shake before each use. Otherwise, the essential oil will separate and sit on top of the mixture.

5 – Homemade Deodorant Recipe For Sensitive Skin With Diatomaceous Earth (BAKING SODA FREE)
Some of you looking for a baking soda free homemade deodorant recipe are in luck. This gentle formula works well for people that are sensitive to baking soda. There is a substitute called Diatomaceous Earth (DE) that can work wonders for your skin. Before researching and writing this article, I had never heard of DE.
Diatomaceous Earth is made from the fossilized remains from a small aquatic organism. Scroll down to learn more about DE, and I also have a link to some interesting resources regarding Diatomaceous Earth.
This is a gentle formula that works well for those that are sensitive to baking soda. Diatomaceous earth is a powder made from fossilized phytoplankton. It’s rich in silica and highly antimicrobial, which is why it works so well. Its pH can vary depending on where it is sourced from, but it is typically lower than baking soda.
3/4 cup arrowroot or organic cornstarch
1/4 cup food grade Diatomaceous Earth (Click here to buy food grade diatomaceous earth from Amazon)
8 tablespoons melted coconut oil
The first step is to blend 1/4 cup of food grade diatomaceous earth and 3/4 cup of arrowroot or organic cornstarch.
The second step is blending six tablespoons of melted coconut oil with your other two ingredients.
Continue adding coconut oil until you’re satisfied with the thickness and consistency of the deodorant.
Lastly, transfer the finished product into an empty sterile deodorant bottle of a small glass jar.
Only add the deodorant in an empty deodorant bottle if you feel there is enough thickness. Otherwise, a glass jar works great as you can simply rub a small amount of deodorant under your arms using your fingertips.
The History of Antiperspirants and Deodorants
While you’re making a batch of homemade deodorant, let’s go back in history and find out where antiperspirants and deodorant came from. The very first deodorant was patented in 1888 by a small company called Mum. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mum_(deodorant) ) based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
There are many health concerns from using antiperspirants and deodorants. These health concerns can range from a minor skin rash to increasing someone’s risk of breast cancer.
The harmful ingredients that could potentially be bad for our health are the aluminum-based compounds in the antiperspirants active ingredient. I must say however that no current studies are showing a link between using these products in the development of breast cancer.

Aluminum ingredients in antiperspirants and deodorants do a great job at plugging your pores, so you don’t sweat. The problem with this is that your body needs to sweat to detox. Another reason why Aluminum in antiperspirants can potentially be dangerous is that your body will start to gain aluminum toxicity.
The aluminum buildup in your body could lead to Alzheimer’s and of course breast cancer. I need to point out once again that it has yet to be proven that the aluminum build up will cause these adverse health effects. But Is it really worth the risk?

Benefits of shea butter in homemade deodorant?
There is an extended list of health benefits when it comes to shea butter. A 2010 study from the National Health Institute found that shea butter acts as an anti-inflammatory due to its cinnamic acid and other natural properties. Lupeol cinnamate was found to reduce skin inflammation. It is also beneficial as an anti-acne for some people.
A good number of people use shea butter as a moisturizer for dry skin due to the concentration of natural vitamins and fatty acids. Shea butter is also a skin soother as it aids in the skins natural collagen production and contains palmitic, stearic, oleic and linolenic acids. These natural compounds protect the skin from drying and can also act as an anti-aging cream if used long term.
Diatomaceous earth (DE) In Homemade Deodorant Recipe?

1 – Medical and First Aid Skills
Medical and first aid survival skills are one of the best skills to learn. These skills are even essential in your everyday life; Especially if you’re into wilderness related hobbies.
I don’t expect you to become a doctor; But learning the basics will be of great help if you ever want to become an asset to yourself or even a survivors community.
An item everyone should have in their bug out bag is a First Aid Handbook (Amazon link). These first aid guides teach you how to wrap up a simple to severe cut to saving someone from choking, be it an adult or a baby.
I’m fortunate to receive a first aid course every year through my work. You can quickly search on Google to find out where and when the next first aid course is in your area; Especially If your employer does not provide one.
Herbal medicine is also something to consider. If you’re living in a post-apocalyptic world, medicine stockpiles will be all but gone. You will have to make due with what’s on hand. If you’re lucky enough to be in a location where vegetation is growing, a lesson in herbal medicine might become a lifesaver.
I’ve been doing a bit of research on how to hotwire a vehicle. What I’ve quickly discovered is that learning how to hotwire a car is much simpler than I previously thought. Of course, only attempt this after the end of the world; And not before the apocalypse if you want to stay out of prison.
You should see many vehicles left abandoned by their owners in a post-apocalyptic world. You’ll undoubtedly have a large choice of cars to chose from. One thing to note is that not all vehicles can easily be hotwired. Newer vehicles have complicated security key fobs that would make it difficult to start the car without it on hand.

Situational awareness is a skill that is extremely useful in everyday life. Some people might call this skill “paranoia” but knowing your surroundings can mean the difference between life an death, especially in a post-apocalyptic environment.
As you’re learning to survive, every other survivor out there is also learning many survival skills. Think of a post-apocalyptic world as a video game. As time goes on, people become skilled in many in-depth survival skills. And you might have difficulty surviving if you don’t keep up. That’s why it’s essential to learn some of these skills before SHTF.
One aspect I love about this book is that there are no drawings like in many books. Instead, there are actual pictures of the plant itself. Pictures make it so much easier to identify the plant you’re looking at or that you want to find. It is mostly taking the guesswork out of the equation.
Learning how to become a gray man is the art of blending into any crowds and environment. Some people would lead you to believe that you need to wear neutral gray clothing to blend in with a group; however, there’s much more to becoming a Gray Man than bland outward appearance. You also need to act the part.
Think of when you were in high school, remember the dreary, average student that no one ever paid much attention? That is mostly what a Gray Man is, someone that’s forgettable and no one remembers.
To bend in you will need to adapt to the different environments. If you’re on a college campus, you will have to act and appear different than if you’re at an NRA convention. If you’re living in a post-apocalyptic future, you will need to look like you have nothing to offer, so people won’t attack you and steal everything you own.
One thing I would recommend if you’re in the beginner’s phase is to keep the gear you purchase simple. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to start fishing today.
The next step is learning how to hunt. I would also consider finding someone you know that can teach you how to hunt or even find a hunting/gun club in your community. 7 – Learn How to Build Your Tools
Learning the skill of making your tools could prove essential in a long-term survival situation. It’s great if you can master the art of sharpening an existing ax. That ax will eventually fail you and its not like you can buy a new one at the hardware store.
It’s not overly complicated to learn how to build tools; you need to know how to do it the right way. You don’t want the tools you make to end up being a safety hazard to you or a family member.

You should also learn how to build a spear to make hunting much easier if you’re without a gun or bullets. The best spear in my opinion to catch small animals and marine life is a split tip spear. A split tip spear is a multi-pronged spear that will help you quickly capture small animals from the forest floor or in a lake or river.
Gather yourself a small twig about an inch around. Cut the thicker end into four parts going about 12 inches down from the top. Spread the four pieces using a stick and sharpen the four tips with your knife.
9 – Learn the Basics of Carpentry
Learning the basics of carpentry could go hand in hand with making your tools and learning how to use them correctly. You might need to build a camp deep in the wilderness where you can hide from dangerous marauders threatening your livelihood.
You don’t need to be an expert at building homes but knowing the basics of calculating where the pieces should go to create a safe place to live is very important. Also, learn how to make a primitive shelter in the wilderness if you’re hiding from dangerous survivors. There are many ways to quickly build a shelter in the forest using only things you find on the forest floor.
10 – Gardening and Food Preservative Skills
Not too long ago almost everyone had a garden. Now only a small percentage of people have a garden large enough for the crop to last all winter. My parents and most generations behind them had extensive gardens. They would preserve the food so it would last all winter. It was a common practice of their everyday life, prepping for the winter.
You don’t need to have a vast garden to learn the basics. Many people living in urban areas will have soil filled rubber or plastic containers; And turn them into a small garden that fits perfectly on a deck.
Gardening is your first step in prepping. But what you do with the food is another matter altogether. If you have a significant enough food stock, you should learn how to preserve it for an extended period. So you’re able to make the food you’re growing last for an entire year.
In the past, everyone was preserving food in some fashion, but bottling was the most common practice in my area. Check out the book “The Urban Homestead” (Amazon Link). Being able to defend yourself and your family from people who would take other survivors belongs by force would certainly prove life-saving. Sure, you could always carry a gun but what about the day you run out of bullets?
You may also want to defend yourself in a way, so you don’t raise any suspicion from nearby groups. Everyone close would hear a gunshot, but they might not hear you break someone’s neck in self-defense.
When it comes to protecting your family from desperate individuals all bets are off. Remember, this is in a post-apocalyptic environment, and some people would turn into complete savages when starving to death. You don’t need to have a black belt in martial arts but knowing how to get out of a situation where someone has a knife at your throat would be useful.

13 – Learning How to Make Soap
Sanitation is critical due to infections and the lack of medicine after doomsday occurs. A simple cut can be a death sentence if you’re always dirty. You need to stay as clean as possible and also be able to safely clean wounds as they occur.
Making soap is not as complicated as one might think. And the best thing about this is that your soap won’t be full of chemicals and perfumes that might be hazardous to your health.
The video below will show you how to make soap using things you would only find in the wilderness. There are other great videos out there about how to make soap, but most of them incorporate stuff like olive oil and household items. If you’re trying to survive after the end of the world, their won’t be any “household items” left before too long.
14 – How To Use a Survival Paracord
Paracords are easy to acquire and have hundreds of uses when you know how to take advantage of them. You might not think a paracord would be as useful as a survival knife, duct tape or a good multi-tool but it can be just as useful if you know how to use it properly.
You need to know how to make a strong paracord knot. After you’ve mastered how to make a knot, you can dive into these 101 useful ways to put a paracord to good use. The video below is quick and to the point. It’s packed with loads of information on how to properly use a paracord for your everyday survival.
15 – Fire Making Skills
Of course, fire making skills should be on the top of the list, my bad; This one slipped my mind since its so obvious.
There are many ways to build a fire and to keep it going. I’m not fond of the stick rub method since I’ve never really been able to achieve this in a reasonable amount of time. My favorite way to build a fire is by using a ferrocerium rod. You should buy one right now; you won’t regret it after watching the funny video below from Alfey Aesthetics.
A Ferrocerium rod is inexpensive, and even if the world ends, you’ll still be able to find something similar to create sparks. I guess when all else fail you can use a rock.
16 – Dental Hygiene Skills
Let’s say you bug out in the wild and you forgot to pack yourself a toothbrush and toothpaste; You’ll need to find a way to keep up with your dental hygiene to avoid infection. I remember watching the movie “Castaway” where Tom Hank’s character had to pluck out one of his infected teeth. One word, OUCH!
First, find the twig of a non-poisonous and fibrous tree and use that to scrape off food left on your teeth. You’ll need to sharpen the tip of the twig, so you’re able to clean in-between your teeth properly.
After some time you won’t be able to find mouthwash anymore so you’ll have to make your own. Boil the bark of any tree with tannic acid. You can quickly gather this in oak trees, birch trees, and aspen to name a few.
The result will be a good substitute for mouthwash long after the end of the world. Also, chewing on a chunk of tree sap will help get the gunk out of your back teeth.
17 – Learn How to Tie a Bowline
Being able to tie a bowline will be critical if you ever need to lift an excessive amount of weight. Remember, the things we use these days to lift heavy object requires either electricity or petroleum of some sort. These are all things that will be lacking after the end of the world.
I remembered a long time ago; we learned how to tie a bowline in the boy scouts. The instructor had us memorize a story about a rabbit.
“The rabbit comes up out of his hole, goes around the tree and gets scared and goes back down his hole.”
What that means is you have to make a loop near one end of the rope. Then pass the other end of the rope up through that loop and move that end behind and around the upper part of the first and then pass it back down through the loop.

You might think that a heat wave is something we can quickly prepare for and survive; But did you know in the past two decades there’s been tens of thousands of death around the world directly implicated with weather-related heat? In this article, I will reveal the dangers of heat waves and give you some tips and life hacks on how to prepare and survive days of extreme heat.
2016 was the warmest year to date on this planet. The last Seven warmest years on Earth was 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2010, 2009, 2005. That might be a sign that something is happening to our global climate.
It is always best to prepare ourselves because as you will find out by reading this article, many people die from hot days.
How Can Extreme Heat Kill You?
In extreme temperatures, some people may die because they will not be able to handle the heat. One of the most significant problems related to heat wave fatalities are the areas with the highest humidity. Sweat evaporates far more slowly in high humidity. No evaporation means your body is not cooling itself down and causes the body to sweat, even more, causing dehydration.
When the human body is not able to dissipate its heat, some adverse effect will begin to happen. Heatstroke, heat exhaustion, cramps, and fainting are common side effects of the body reaching an unmanageable high temperature.
These types of afflictions will more prominently affect the elderly and young children. People who are sick and suffer from a lowered immune system will also be significantly affected.
Essentially, the heat overwhelms the body’s ability to cool itself down. You know you’re in trouble when you eventually stop sweating altogether. The electrolyte’s you lose during sweating can cause muscle cramps or fainting. Of course, you’ll become very thirsty at this stage and as your brain becomes affected the symptoms can include weakness, dizziness, nausea and become uncoordinated.
As the human body experiences an immense water shortage, blood will become thicker. The thicker your blood becomes, the harder it will be for the heart to pump it sufficiently. At this stage, the kidneys will also not be able to clean the blood properly, and the oxygen levels will drop. The heart will then try to compensate by pumping more blood at a faster rate.
As the heart is compensating for all these adverse effects the heat is causing the body, it will begin heating up even more. This will cause the skin to become cold and clammy. The next stage is, unfortunately, DEATH.
The European Heatwave of 2003
In 2003 the European heatwave was thought to be the continent’s warmest heatwave in recorded history. There more than 20,000 fatalities across Europe that were the direct result of the heatwave.
The UK’s hottest day on record was August 10th, 2003. In France, some area’s recorded the heat wave at 104F (40C) or warmer for seven consecutive days during the summer.
In France alone there was over 3000 death during a single day, now known in France as Black Monday. Most victims of the extreme heat were elderlies. This short video clip below will show you what happened during the deadly summer of 2003.
What Was the Cause and Impact of the European Heatwave?
The cause of the European heatwave was due to a large and persistent area of high pressure that sat across much of Europe in July and August 2003. As the days went on, sunshine and high temperature allowed the heat to build up day after day with barely any rain to cool the area down.
The Impact of the heatwave and other heatwaves across the globe, aside from heat-related death, the agricultural sectors was severely affected. Loss of crops and livestock cost farmers Billions of dollars in damages and lost revenues for the year.
The population adapted by altering their working hours in hopes of avoiding the hottest parts of the day.
Water wells began drying up, and the urban areas banned the use of garden hoses,, especially for people watering their lawns or washing their vehicles.
Tips for How to Prepare Yourself for a Heatwave
Periods of extreme heat can be fatal to some people that fail to prepare themselves for an imminent heatwave. Here are some tips you should do to get ready for summer days of extreme heat.
Lower window Blinds and close all the curtains, so the windows are not able to let any sunlight inside the home.
When the temperature inside your home is cooler than it is outdoors, make sure to close all the windows. If there is a drop in temperature overnight, open the windows in hopes of cooling down the interior of the house.
If staying in your home is not possible due to the heat, you should go inside a public building equipped with an air conditioning system. This could be as simple as going to the library or the grocery store. Local governments will open facilities to the public so people can come in and cool down. However, this is mostly done in periods of long-term heat waves lasting several days and weeks.
Use fans and AC units in at least one room of the house.
Try to avoid going outdoors between 11 am and 6 pm because those hours will be the warmest.
If you’re outside during a heatwave, avoid doing any physical activities like running or playing sports. If you are outdoors, wear something to cover your head and make sure to always have a bottle of water on you so you can stay hydrated. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen since the UV index will most likely be extreme.
Having a cold shower or bath a couple of times a day will help your body cool off. Even the garden hose can do a great job at doing this if you have water available. Some municipalities are still able to pump water to all the homes even in the event of a power outage. A generator is a great thing to have if you have no electricity and your only source of water is from a private well.
Drink at least 1.5 liters of water per day. Avoid drinking alcohol or caffeinated drinks, If you’re in a severe situation where the heat could be of detriment to your health. You should also avoid drinking liquids with a high content of sugar. “These beverages are very dehydrating and act as diuretics. They cause your kidneys to excrete pure water without ridding your body of any toxins. Again, probiotic liquids to the rescue. Replace soda pop with healing, bubbly probiotic liquids. Make sure to remain vigilant if you’re around infants, children’s and seniors since heat stroke can quickly overtake them.
Do not turn on anything that generates heat. Avoid cooking food inside your home and use a BBQ instead if possible. Eating hot food on a hot summer day might not be such a good idea if your goal is staying cool, there are plenty of food that you can eat cold during a heatwave.
Loose-fitting cotton cloths is an effective way to keep your body cooler. Light color clothing absorbs less heat and the fabric wicks away moisture from your body.
Survival Life Hacks to Beat the Heat
These survival life hacks are a bit more unconventional than the tips above but they do work when in desperate need of cooling off. Here is a small list of my top 8 heatwave life hacks.
1 – Spicy Food is your friend
Have you ever wondered why people living in the warmest climates on earth would most likely be the ones eating the spiciest food? The reason for this is spicy food will make you sweat which allows your body to cool down. Your body will also be provided with a good dose of endorphins. Endorphins will calm your body down and as a result, will produce less heat.
2 – Homemade Air Conditioner
You can make a DIY air conditioner with only a few ingredients. You will need to fill a bowl with ice cubes and turn on a fan in front of it. This will allow the air blowing from the fan to flow through the ice. Of course, this is nowhere near as useful as a real AC unit, but it does have a cooling effect. Try it and let me know if it works for you!
3 – Turn Off Computer
Your computer and other electrical equipment can emit an immense amount of heat. Unplug all the electrical equipment that is also not in use. Because even though they are in the off position, they are still emitting a small amount of heat because nothing is off until its unplugged.
4 – Bed+Freezer=Awesomness:
I never tried this life hack, but it does make perfect sense! Before going to bed, place your folded bedsheets in the fridge or freezer to cool them off. The sheets will not stay cold for very long after your warm body comes in contact with them, but it will give you some much-needed relief during extreme heat.
5 – Turn Hot Water Bottle Cold
Find yourself a rubber hot water bottle, the kind people use to soothe body aches. Fill it up with cold water and place it in the fridge for an hour. Setting the cold water bottle on your neck is a perfect way to cool off during a heatwave.
6 – LED’s
Change all the light bulbs in your house from incandescent to CFLs, and LEDs as they produce almost no heat. By doing this, you will save on energy cost and you will also have a more refreshing and well lit home.
7 – Mist Yourself
Find yourself a small spray bottle. Make sure this bottle have a setting that enables it to spray a very fine mist. Fill half of the bottle with water and place it in the freezer. When half the bottle is frozen, fill the other half with water. Now you have water that will stay colder for longer because of the frozen water at the bottom of the bottle. You can now keep cool spraying a mist of cold water on your face and arms while you’re trying to survive a heat wave.
8 – Old Linnen Shirts
Find yourself some old linen shirts from the thrift store and cut them up in the size of small towels. Dunk the linen towels in cold water and use that to cool yourself down by placing them over your head and neck. Linnen is even more breathable than cotton and will also be cooler when wet.

Today, I don’t worry too much about a full-on apocalypse. I believe in prepping for natural disasters, blackouts, job loss. Those are things that have a high chance of happening to most people. In this article, I will talk about 15 tips & lifehacks on how to stop worrying about the end of the world and your doomsday anxiety.
As I’m writing this article, I remember the first time I became aware of the doomsday hysteria. I was in 7th grade in the mid 90’s, and I had borrowed a VHS recording of “Ancient Prophecies.” When I was watching this end times documentary, I became aware of how many different possibilities and also how little time we have before a doomsday apocalypse.
I never really thought of end times and doomsday anxiety, but the more I watch some prepper YouTube videos, the more I realize how some people honestly believe the end it just around the corner. There’s of course nothing wrong with that, and I encourage people to prepare for such events because you never know. Better to be fully equipped when SHTF or if it’s as simple as a weeklong blackout after a massive storm.
How My Doomsday Anxiety Began
As I was saying, my doomsday anxiety began in 1994 while I was in 7th grade. Have you ever watched the Ancient Prophecies documentary? Something to jog your memory would be the creepy guy (and his voice) narrating the doc while walking through the halls of the great pyramids of Egypt.
The most significant doomsday prediction was the December 2012 Mayan calendar prophecy. That one scared me until I got a bit older and informed myself about what this prediction was all about.
That 2012 end times prophecy alone generated millions of dollars in movie ticket and book sales. Doomsday predictions are very lucrative, and that’s the reason people want to keep them alive right up to the next day of the supposed end of the world.
That documentary was when I became interested in this topic, and I am even more interested in it today but for different reasons. Let me know in the comment section at the end of the article what your first end of the world awakening began.

Tips and Life Hacks to Help Stop Worrying About the End of the World and the End Times
It is understandable that many of you would be worrying about the end of the world. The world we live in today is filled with uncertainty and escalating tensions between individual nations. So it’s no wonder some people begin to have doomsday anxiety.
When you begin to feel overly afraid of the end times, and what may happen you can rely on some of these tips to help you get through your day.
I sometimes have anxiety, but my anxiety is for different reasons. Whether your fear is because of a doomsday scenario or anything else going on in your life, these tips should have you covered.
Some of these tips might seem like common sense, but I am confident that there will be at least one that should help you.

1 – Write all your Worries Down
One of the most common effects of worrying is sleepless nights. If you’re laying in bed and can’t sleep, you should get up and go somewhere private and calm where you can write all of your worries down on a piece of paper.
I suggest paper because the white light of an Ipad or computer will send a signal to your brain that it’s daytime. You don’t need your mind thinking it’s morning if you’re already having trouble sleeping.
When you write things down on a piece of paper, it lets your brain relax because it doesn’t have to keep remembering all the details of what is worrying you. In the journal “Anxiety, Stress and Coping” scientist confirmed that chronic worriers are also problem avoiders.
2 – Chewing Gum
Chewing gum might be a simple thing we do every day but did you know that chewing gum sends a signal to your brain that you’re eating?
When the brain senses that you’re eating something, it knows that you’re not in danger, so it begins to relax. Let’s face it, if you’re in immediate danger of some uncertain future, the last thing on your mind would be enjoying a nice meal or a piece of gum. So give it a shot!
You don’t need to go to the gym or run a marathon, all you need to do is go for a walk. If you’re feeling anxious, walking can help calm you down, especially if you’re close to nature. Being close to nature will give you an extra boost of energy, especially If you can hear the birds and smell the forest.
I like exercising when Im feeling stressed out or anxious, and it is amazing how my mood changes from anxious to feeling good in that short period.
4 – Have a Look In the Mirror
I heard of this tip a long time ago, and even though it was never something I did, I do know some people that found this tactic useful, especially if you imagine things.
If you feel that your throat is closing up on you, take a look in the mirror, and you’ll soon find out that you look completely normal; and that it was just your mind playing tricks on you. Simple yet useful for those of you that might imagine adverse health symptoms or even some sort of hallucination.
5 – Carry Food and Water Wherever You Go
Lack of food and water in your system can trigger anxiety. You should always carry a small snack and some water with you wherever you go so you can avoid this anxious trigger. I usually take a protein bar on me if I go to a place where I know I might not be able to eat for a while.
Some people can feel dizzy when hungry, and that would be reason enough to feel anxious if out in public.
6 – Carry a Grounding Object
No, not an object to discharge your static electricity, more like an object that will keep you grounded and bring your mind back to the present instead of focusing on the future.
A picture of loved ones is my favorite grounding object. I have a picture of my wife and three boys, and I have it on me at all times. I have tons of pictures on my phone of course, like most of you also im sure. But print an image that when looking at it brings you back to a happy time.
Works for me, I know, it sounds ridiculous, but give it a try, you don’t have to tell anyone.
7 – Ground Yourself
Déja Vu huh? This time around, the tip of grounding yourself is all about using your senses.
Pick out these five things around your environment when you begin to feel anxious;

The book I’m reading at the time of writing this article is “12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos” by Jordan Peterson. I’ve never been much into self-help books, but this one is a bit different.
It’s currently the number one selling a book on Amazon.com, and for a good reason, its well written and most of it makes perfect sense.
You might think that reading a self-help book about anxiety wouldn’t help you, but all I can say is try it. If you feel like you can’t talk to anyone about your anxiety, then a self-help book is the answer.
The reason for that is because by reading something about your particular anxiety you will realize that you’re not alone. You will also realize that someone out there understands you and could be able to help you through a book.
I find that reading, in general, can take my mind off of things and so-called self-help books that relate to anxiety does an excellent job of easing the mind.
Finding a distraction is a perfect thing to get your mind off of your worries and focus on something else. My best distraction is writing and watching TV.
With Netflix, you can binge-watch almost anything you want. That would be the best place to start if you wish some distraction.
Another good distraction and something that might ease your mind are to talk to a friend. Not necessarily about any problems you may have, have a conversation so you can think of something else and not what’s bothering you at the time.
I’m still trying to find a how to stop worrying about the end of the world documentary on Netflix. Let me know if you find one.
10 – Have an Escape Plan
Have an escape plan when you go out in case you become anxious and need to leave. You probably won’t have to use this one but knowing of a way out of a situation will help you not to have a panic attack.
Feeling trapped will only heighten your panic attack, and you don’t need another reason to feel anxious. An escape plan is a good tip for anyone, not just for preventing panic attacks but for your safety.
If something terrible and unforeseen happens at least, you’ll know how to escape and have better chances of making it out alive.
11 – Reverse Psychology
Have you ever thought of trying out some reverse phycology on yourself when you have a panic attack? I know, it sounds crazy but let me explain.
When you feel a panic attack, or you know your anxiety level is going to begin rising, your natural reaction would be to try to stop it, right? I say you should let it happen.
Embrace your panic attack instead of trying to run from it; you will soon find out that by not trying to avoid your anxiety you will get through it far quicker than when you try to fight it off. Reverse phycology can be enacted in many ways on how to stop worrying about the end of the world.
12 – A Good Night’s Sleep is a Great Anxiety Cure!
Try and have a good night’s sleep, I know, easier said than done if you’re lying in bed worrying about the future.
I once heard a therapist say;
“When a client comes into my office suffering from anxiety or depression, I tell them, ‘Go home and commit to getting eight hours of sleep every night this week. When you wake, make your bed. Then come to see me in a week, and we’ll talk.”
What he means by that is when you’re sleeping, the body heals itself. You’re not only repairing your body, but you’re also healing your mind. It’s almost like pushing a reset button. It works exceptionally well with kids and with their mood swings as I’m sure you know if you have children.

Some of you might have triggers that pave the way for a panic attack to happen. Tell yourself that every situation is different from the last and try to focus on those small differences while your anxiety is elevating.
Even if its just something as simple as the weather, focus on it; and tell your brain that it’s not the same and that you can get through the situation without panicking.
Might sound a bit odd but it might also work at alleviating your panic attack and put you in a better place.
14 – Fidget Spinner
Buy yourself a fidget spinner. Spin it. Watch it spin. Focus of the spinning and having the fidget spinner balance on the tip of your finger. That’s all, it’s that simple.
Pilar Trelles, MD, a psychiatrist at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. She had this to say about fidget spinner when she was asked if fidget spinners help people cope with anxiety.
“Yes, fidget spinners can help folks cope with higher-than-average energy levels, anxiety, or extreme sensitivity to certain environments. For example, explains Dr. Trelles, “when someone is hypersensitive to the environment they might bite their nails, pull out their cuticles, or pinch their skin.” Fidget spinners offer a less harmful way to expend that nervous energy.”.

15 – Have No Fear
My final doomsday anxiety tip is “don’t fear your anxiety.” Train your mind to have no fear of your anxiety and to not worry about having a panic attack. Most of your panic comes merely from the fear of having a panic attack. Just let the panic attack happen, and you will notice that the level of your anxiety will decrease.
The length of time your panic attack last will also slowly decrease as you train your mind not to fear what’s coming.
I will finish off my list of doomsday anxiety tips with this quote.
“At the end of the day, the only thing we have to fear is fear itself. If you stop fearing anxiety, it will have no reason to exist anymore.”
I understand that this might sound impossible but I’ve been there, and now I don’t fear it and its almost entirely gone for me. It took a long while, but as I trained my mind in a different aspect of anxiety, I have so much more control over my panic attacks.
Remember, you are in control of your mind and body. As soon as you fully believe that fact, you will be on the right path to having an anxiety free life.
First off I want to say that I’ve never tried this product. I saw someone talk about it a while back on a YouTube video and remembered the name of this remedy.
Formulated for symptoms associated with extreme or sudden panics such as anxiety, tension, stress or fear.
Directions: Ages 12 and up, take six drops or pellets by mouth (ages 0 to 11, give three drops or pellets) as needed or as directed by a health professional. Under age 2, crush/dissolve pellets in purified water. Sensitive persons begin with one drop or pellet and gradually increase to full dose.
Fearing the future is a normal human habit but what is not normal is fearing a doomsday scenario to the point where it begins controlling your life.

Since the inception of my survival and prepping website, I’ve watched many YouTube videos and read even more articles relating to the subject. I’m no expert, but there are many things that I learn along the way that doesn’t make much sense to me. In this article, I will be talking about the top mistakes preppers make while getting themselves ready for a future crisis.
Have you ever watched Dooms Day Preppers and found some things they did a bit odd? I have, but in all fairness, its reality TV and they have to do things to make the show exciting and controversial at times to keep the audience entertained.
Here is my list of the top 15 prepper mistakes that I found while researching all things survival.
1 – SHUT UP! Don’t Tell People That You Have an Emergency Shelter!
The reason why I’m placing this prepper mistake as my number one is because it can end up being the most serious mistake you can make.
There was an old episode of the twilight zone (Shelter Skelter, see video below) where a guy was at a party, and he was telling everyone about his fallout shelter. What do you think happens when the emergency sirens went off? All of his neighbors came to his house and smashed the door of the shelter. Afterward, It was announced that the siren was a false alarm. Thank goodness it was because you would have had a massive dose of radiation come in if there was an atomic blast near the area.
Tell the people you trust and that you would want to join you and your family in your shelter in cases of an emergency. You can also talk about it to other preppers if you have a prepper community near your home; But other than that small circle of people, shut up!
The most dangerous person is a desperate person, and you don’t want a desperate person trying to make their way inside the only safe place left for your family.
2 – Not Prepping for the Most Common Disaster Scenario For Your Area
One mistake some preppers make is not preparing for the most common type of disaster scenario for the area they live. It’s great if you have all your basis covered but if you only prep for an atomic blast and nuclear fallout and not the more common disasters you might be out of luck when a more predictable disaster strikes.
I live in an area where there can be significant flooding. It happens approximately once every decade. This year we had a flood that surpassed a record flood from the 70s, and a lot of people were not prepared.
Some had to take refuge in shelters after just a single day of not having power. Fortunately, where I live, I was not affected by the flood, but it doesn’t mean I should not prepare for the day when It might affect me.
A fallout shelter below ground will not do you any good if a flood strikes. All you will be left with is the cost of replacing everything you had prepped for in your water-filled underground bunker.
Back in 2014, Hurricane Arthur made landfall in our area as a category one hurricane. Many of us were out of power for more than a week. We were out of power for four days. We stayed home with our three kids and had no problems.
Fortunately, this was in the summer and not in the sub-zero temperature of winter. We had enough food and luckily we still had municipal water that was safe to drink and use for the shower. We had to take cold showers, but that is something everyone should be doing anyway.
Ok, don’t scold me for saying this, especially in the age of political correctness; but preppers, you need to get into shape! How do you expect to be able to protect your family and your property if you have a hard time walking up a flight of stairs?
I understand that in this fast pace world that it might not be easy to work out as often as we would all like. I’m 35 years old, and I can remember when I was 25 how much easier it was to exercise daily. I would still consider myself in great shape because I try to do different types of things other than just going to the gym. I love to mountain bike and kayak and find that by doing different things it keeps me motivated.
If you want to get into shape but scared of going into an intimidating gym (I was like that), start with “at home workouts.”
I began my fitness journey over ten years ago with a program called P90X from Beachbody. You probably saw many of their infomercials on television during the wee hours of the night. One thing I can guarantee you from experience, IT WORKS!
It’s all well and good for me to write an article about how to build a campfire with a Ferrocerium Rod; but shouldn’t I know how to do it if I’m going to call myself a prepper? A lot of people buy all sorts of fancy survival gear but never actually take the time to learn how to use it. You need to accurately and effectively learn how to use your survival equipment in case there’s an SHTF (Shit Hits The Fan) situation.
Think about it for a minute, if you’re caught in the middle of a crisis without your bug out bag or any self-defense weapons, all you can rely on is yourself. You have to become the weapon that will defend you and your family from whatever danger comes your way.
If you’re in relatively good shape and know how to defend yourself; and learn many different survival skills you will have a much higher chance of survival. You don’t need to be macgyver to be a survivalist, but it does help to have a particular type of skill set.
5 – Chose the Right Food When Storing for Long Term
Most of the preparatives videos I watch relating to a long-term emergency food storage stock are great information. Including one of my articles, you can read by clicking here. But there are some videos I’ve watched that suggest some very odd things that are indeed not food items you would want to rely on in a survival situation.
The first example is Moroccan Ramen Noodle Soup. These packets of minute made soup are awful for your health, especially if you depend on that for your protein and nutrients intake. The only consumption you will receive from this soup is a massive dose of sodium. Unless you have an equally massive amount of water to wash that down with you probably won’t survive too long eating this soup.
There’s also no protein, or pretty much anything else of value. These noodles are what I would call “fillers.” A can of premium dog food would be better for your overall health than this crap.
What I also sometimes see in peoples long-term emergency storage are sodium filled snacks. There’s nothing wrong with having some comfort food in your emergency stock. I would recommend it but what I wouldn’t recommend is having a considerable amount of those types of food. Just be sensible and do your research before making or buying an emergency food stock.
6 – Having Too Many Small Pets
I debated placing this one on the list because I’m not sure if this is something that is necessary to avoid if you’re a prepper. I think I would only recommend this prepper mistake to preppers that believe the end of the world is coming and they are preparing for such an event.
Most preppers, however, prepare on a smaller scale like natural disasters that will leave them without power for days, even weeks. If you believe the apocalypse is coming, you should probably look into getting a big animal.
A big dog can be an asset to you and your family if you’re trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world. A small dog will drag you down while a big dog can become your families, ultimate protector.
7 – Not Having Anything to Exercise Your Mind in Your Bug In/Out Location
Some people only think of food and water while setting up a bug in or bug out location. Of course, food and water are the most important things to look after, but you should not neglect your mind when preparing for the worst.
Store some books in your shelter and better yet, buy some survival books that will be of benefit to you in a SHTF situation. Books about how to make a garden, how to preserve food or how to make fire and my personal favorite, a First Aid Book (Amazon Link)!
The valuable information in a first aid book would be something that would most likely save someone’s life in these types of scenarios. If you begin to panic and forget your first aid training, all you would need to do is grab the book to refresh your memory.
Even spending time learning everything there is to learn inside a first aid book would make you a valuable person to have in a group in a post-apocalyptic world.
Board games are another good thing to have in a shelter. Keeping your mind occupied while you wait days or weeks to know what’s going on outside might prevent you from going crazy!
8 – Preppers That do Not Have Any Fitness Equipment In Their Shelter
The best way to keep from going into depression while you’re stuck in a fallout shelter is exercise. I almost never see a fallout shelter list that includes exercise equipment in their list of things to have. I’m not talking about anything elaborate or expensive bulky equipment. Having a few dumbbells is all you need.,
I recommend resistance bands. Resistance bands take no space, are cheap and weighs next to nothing. You could even bring them with you if you need to bug out. This type of exercise equipment can be just as good as a row full of dumbbells. All you need to do to increase resistance in these bands is to widen your legs while standing on the band. If you widen your legs, it makes the section of band from your foot to your hand shorter and adds resistance, mirroring a heavier weight than previous.
I’ve seen a lot of prepper videos where people have buried their stashes and pinned the specific locations on their GPS. If the grid goes down for an extended period, or if there’s a massive EMP that unleashes near your area, how are you going to be able to find your way with a GPS that no longer works?
Learn how to use a map. It wasn’t that long ago that we traveled with maps. We had to stop on the side of the road for 5 minutes to figure out how to get to our next location.
What I suggest is buying a map of your area, or better yet, a map of your entire country in the form of a book. That way you will be able to go where you need to if there’s a long-term blackout situation.
Another great way to find out where you’re going is to learn how to navigate by using the sun. Here is an article I wrote, “11 Easiest Ways To Navigate Without A Compass”.
One thing I can say for sure is that learning how to find your way using the sun is far simpler than I expected. Especially before I first began my research about the topic.
10 – Stop Spending Too Much Money On Survival Gadgets!
Another prepper mistake I see all the time is people buying expensive and elaborate survival gadgets they probably don’t need. Most of these gadgets are very gimmicky, especially if they are grossly overpriced.
You see it all the time, someone trying to reinvent a knife or an axe. Yes, some survival gadgets are useful, don’t get me wrong, I’ve been known to buy too many gadgets in the past. It gets kind of addictive after a while BUT I justify it by having a website and having to have things to research and review. What’s your excuse???
Set a limit for yourself by establishing a fixed amount every month for prepping. You don’t want to bankrupt yourself from obsessively prepping. What’s the use of preparing for after the storm if you’re not living your life beforehand?
11 – Not Keeping Up With the Expire Dates
You should have two types of emergency food storage. One that is for the near future and one that is for something that might only happen in the far future.
In the two to five-year shelf life section, you need to keep up with the expiry dates and make sure to rotate your food stock. Go a step further and stick some expire labels on every food items. Don’t forget the water containers since, after a while; water will begin to go bad if there was some sort of contamination.
It’s a good idea to also have Water Purification Tablets (Amazon Link) in case your water starts turning green. These types of tablets will ensure that you have safe drinking water for a very long time.
12 – Not Staying Organized Is a Big Prepper Mistake
One of the biggest mistakes some preppers make is not staying organized. If you stock up on food and stick it a room somewhere and forget about it, it might not be exactly what you expect when it is time to recover that food if an emergency strikes.
Preppers should also have a plan if the time comes when you have to evacuate your home and maybe even the city or town you call home. Just like you have a fire escape route plan for your home, plan a bug out a route that would avoid significant traffic backup if you need to leave fast.
13 – Not Storing Enough Water
Usually, most preppers will have enough food to last at least 72 hours but what about water? Are a few cases of bottled water enough? It wouldn’t be enough for my family of five.
Every member of your family will need to have at least two liters of water a day. Multiply that by least a week, and you should be all set.
14 – Only Preparing to Bug Out Rather Than Bugging In
Many preppers just prepare a bug out plan and lack the focus of a bug in plan. I agree that bugging out when the world is ending and traveling deep into the woods sure seems like an adventure. But if a hurricane or an earthquake strikes, the safest place you can be might be in the basement of your home.
It’s a different story If a storm is strong enough to call for an evacuation but if its something more manageable then you will most likely stay home.
So while you’re planning your cool bug out scenario take some time to think about staying put for a few days. And remember, if a nuclear bomb goes off close to your area, the last thing you want to do is be traveling outside and exposing yourself to radioactive fallout.
15 – Storing All Your Prepping Gear In The Same Place
This is probably the most common mistake a rookie prepper makes, Im even guilty of making this mistake. Storing all your prepping gear in the same place, and that is a big mistake. You’ve heard “don’t put all your eggs in one basket,” well this is pretty much the same idea.
Some preppers have all their gear stored in their garage. Did you know that the garage is usually the weakest part of your home? If a hurricane strikes and your garage is inaccessible, how will you access all your prepping gear, food, and water? Try to store some prepping equipment in different locations within your home.
If you have a storage locker that you’re renting, you could store some items there. If you are unable to go to your house, at least you’ll have a backup stock.

I work for an electrical corporation and I know how complicated the electrical grid is and also how fragile. Where I’m from, we never used to have hurricanes, but in 2014 a category one made landfall. More and more storms are going to affect the power grid, and we have to prepare ourselves for a long-term blackout. In this article, we will be talking about the best ways to prepare for a short and long-term power outage.
When we face a long-term power failure, there will undoubtedly be massive looting from an unprepared population. Everyone will be rushing to grocery stores to find food, and water and this can make for a hazardous situation if you’re outside with your family.
We are so dependent on electricity that most people panic when the power is out for only a few hours. They don’t panic because they will have a lack of food or water, they panic because they will miss an episode of a television show. Do you now understand why the western world would be screwed if we were facing a long-term blackout? A massive power outage would be a devastating event to our population.
We can prepare ourselves for an imminent power failure by following the steps I will lay out. If you follow these tips, you should have no problem staying home and surviving a power outage that might last for weeks. Many people often think that this type of event will never happen, but are we all forgetting about the massive blackout that left 50 million people in northern USA and parts of Canada without power? The power was out for approximately 23 hours and left 11 people DEAD! More on that story to follow.
Even though the USA is considered a superpower, our electrical grid resembles something from a third world country. The grid is vulnerable, and we never know when the next blackout will be.
The Primary Causes of Power Outages
Many things can affect the power grid. These causes can be small and only affect a limited amount of people, and other causes can be lead to a widespread blackout.
Animals: Animals are one of the leading cause of isolated power outages. Small animals like squirrels can efficiently run on the lines without being electrocuted. They will, however, be electrocuted and cause a power outage if they come into contact with specific electrical equipment. Some electrical companies apply different types of barriers to prevent this from happening, but it does not always work. The Washington Post cited in an article that squirrels and their partners in crime can cause from 10-20% of all power outages.
Automobile Accidents: There are many instances where a power outage occurs from an automobile accident when a car collides with a utility pole. If the pole breaks and falls it will bring the power lines with it and cause damage resulting to a power outage.
Severe Weather Related Blackouts: The most common and widespread blackout situation would result from storms such as hurricanes and tropical storms. Lighting storms are also a primary culprit of power outages. As the climate is steadily changing, we can expect stronger storms that can leave a trail of devastating damage.
Ice and Snow: This, of course, is another weather-related event; but I find it necessary to place this one on its own because, in places where the winter is met with snow and ice, the results can be devastating. Just a small amount of freezing rain can cause trees to break and fall on the lines. The utility poles will easily snap in half like twigs. Storms like this can last a couple of hours and leave a lot of people in the dark of days. I know because I’ve been there!
Immediate Consequences of a Power Outage We Can Expect
Even if we most commonly experience a power outage for a short length of time, that doesn’t mean we should not prepare for a time where the lights will just not come back on. When the lights go off, the first things we usually experience is concern over when the power will come back online so we can resume with our daily chores and entertainment. Here is a short list of what you can expect within the first 24 hours.
Lights out, everything in our home stops working, and you soon realize how dependent you are on electricity.
You might still have phones for a short while, but you most likely will not have internet access thus closing the door to the outside world.
Being able to see the stars for the people that live in dense urban populations.
Other than buses that depend on gasoline, all additional electricity dependent public transportation will cease.
Food shortage due to lack of distribution and people clearing shelves in panic.
You won’t be able to have access to physical cash because the ATM’s will no longer be functional. Electronic payment methods will be down as well. This is the reason why you should have a small reserve of cash in case something like this happens.
Some people will die due to their medical equipment not working correctly without the necessary amount of electricity.
Panik begins. Yes, on the first day, the first-hour people will start to panic and if you go outdoors, you will most likely see this happening like in 2003’s massive blackout.
August 14, 2003 – First Massive Blackout In History
We never think that a blackout that would last only 23 hours would have such devastating effect on our population’s way of living and economy. As a result of the 23-hour outage, 50 million were out of power, 11 people died, and the cost to the economy was over 6 Billion dollars. All that in less than a day!
The problem began in Ohio where a set of human and operational errors set the stage for the blackout. A down power line went unnoticed because the alarm system failed at a local company called “First Energy.”
A technician from “The Regional Service Operator Midwest ISO” had turned off the monitoring system while performing repairs. This monitoring system signals an alerts of a grid problem. He forgot to turn it back before going on his lunch break. A simple human error was the cause of this terrible event.
As a result of the alert system failing to alert the power utility of a downed power line, Ohio’s electrical grid became unstable. With too much voltage flowing through the power lines, power plants began shutting down. The shutdowns created a cascading effect from Ohio through Ontario Canada and all the way to New York.
Over 100 power plants were shut down for 23 hours causing mayhem in New York City and elsewhere. Watch this 10 minute documentary from The New York Times below for the full story of this historical Blackout.
How to Prepare For Long-Term Power Outages
When preparing yourself for an eventual long-term power outage, it’s necessary to have a 72-hour emergency food supply; With enough food to feed you and your family.
We also need to anticipate that elevators and garage doors will not be able to function after a power loss. I recommend you figure out how to disengage the garage manually before there’s a power outage. Learning this will allow you the ability to take out your vehicle if you need to bugout real quick.
7 Factors You Should Take Into Account For Copping With An Electrical Failure;
Stay Calm; Staying calm and not getting yourself into a full-on panic is one of the most important things you can do to stay safe. When the blackout of 2003 happened, New York City was dealing with mass panic that was the cause of many injuries and death. A power outage doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world. Stay calm and stay safe.
Emergency Lighting such as a crank or solar flashlight. Having your standard flashlights are crucial, but it is also essential to have the type of lighting that does not require batteries. It’s not a bad idea to have candles, but you should only use candles as a last resort due to its fire hazard. A crank LED light will serve you much better than any candles would.
An Auxiliary Power Supply can be critical if the power is out for an extended period. You don’t need a generator capable of producing energy for an entire house. All you need is enough power capacity to charge your devices and to give you the ability to cook food and stay warm in colder climates.
Heating; Being able to keep yourself warm in cold weather can be essential in surviving through a long-term blackout. Means of heat is also necessary for cooking and boiling water.
Food and Water: It is essential to have enough food and water to last at least 72 hours. 72 hours is how much time it can take for things to come back to normal. It can also take up to 72 hours for the government to set up emergency shelters for people in need of assistance.
Means of Communication:; Having the ability to communicate with people is also crucial in these situations. Communication does not necessarily mean picking up your cell phone and calling for help; it can also mean having a radio to listen for instructions and updates.
Sanitation; Some people forget to add proper hygiene on their checklist; but this is an essential part of staying healthy. If you do not have the means to stay clean and bacteria free, you could become ill. Becoming ill when there is no help in sight can turn an ordinary situation into something much more deadly.
As I mentioned above, you should only use candles as a last resort because of the apparent risk of fire. Especially in this day an age when we have cheap and reliable lighting technologies to substitute candles. It’s still not a bad idea to have a box of candles in your house in case the blackout turns out to be a long-term grid-down scenario.
Remember one fact; when people are in full panic mode like in 2003, it doesn’t have to be a long-term blackout to have desperate people roaming the streets. That’s the reason for having all the lights on in your home might not be such a good idea because you might attract some uninvited visitors. Only use the lighting that you need so you’re not attracting the crazies!
Emergency Power Supply
These days, there are many different options to opt for regarding emergency back up power supplies. You also do not necessarily have to spend thousands of dollars on a generator. Having the means to recharge your cell phone can be essential if you’re in this type of situation for a few days.
You can buy a Compact Portable Battery Power Bank (Amazon Link) that can charge multiple devices. The best thing about these is that they are inexpensive for what it can accomplish. Another great thing is they are smaller than an iPhone 6, so you can bring it with you if you decide to bug out of your home.
If you require more energy, you can opt for a generator. Generators can be loud and prove dangerous if the surrounding population is becoming increasingly desperate. I would suggest getting an inverter generator, they are more expensive, but they are also much quieter.
Prepare emergency water and food supply to last at least 72-hours. However, I recommend a two week supply. Regarding food, we prefer canned foods that are pre-cooked and can consume either cold or warm. Don’t forget to also stock up on raw vegetables canned corn (I know, it’s a grain), peas and carrots, etc.. and even fruits (canned fruit salads, peaches, pears, etc.).
The first foods to consume will be those that have a short shelf life. You should start with the frozen products because they will begin to thaw rapidly. Only open your refrigerator and freezer in case of absolute necessity to keep the internal temperature as low as possible.
Transfer Ice cube trays from your freezer to the refrigerator, which will help keep food cold for longer. If a thick layer of frost has formed in your freezer, do not hesitate to scrape it and put it in the vegetable tray of your refrigerator as well.
A conventional refrigerator will keep food cold for about 4 hours. After this time, it will start to rise to room temperature. When the blackout takes place in the winter, and your kitchen is closed off from the rest of the house, do not hesitate to open a window and let the cold air in to bring the room temperature down.
A freezer that stays closed keeps food frozen for 12 to 20 hours depending on the outdoor temperature. The colder the room, the longer it will keep food at a lower temperature.
Means of Generating Heat
If you’re stuck without electricity for an extended period in colder climates, you will need to be able to produce sufficient heat to survive.
Gas and oil heaters have the advantage of not depending on the power grid to operate and are excellent for heating in the event of a power outage. Propane heaters are uncommon these days since the arrival of electric heating in homes. These types of heating systems are very effective for heating entire rooms.
The best heaters to have for these types of crisis are the Indoor-Safe Portable Propane Radiant Heaters (Amazon Link). Heaters like this one can be fueled by a regular size propane tank or a 1 lb. Liquid propane cylinder. It’s always prudent to have a few 1lb propane cylinders in stock for when you need them.
The small propane cylinders can come in handy if you have a little propane stove like a Coleman Classic Propane Stove from Amazon. Small stoves like these are perfect for cooking during a blackout. It uses the same size propane cylinders (1 lb) as the heaters so you won’t have to buy different sizes. Portable stoves are best in case you have to pack up and leave.
What’s great about this particular crank radio is that it can also be used as a power bank to charge your cell phone. Having the ability to charge your phone by even 1% can be life-saving. Cell phone use would become harder as time went on and the initial power outage turned into a long-term grid-down situation.
Proper sanitation is important, especially if medicine become scarce in a long-term crisis. I’ve always reminded people to stock up on hand sanitizer. Liquid hand sanitizer is affordable and has a long shelf life.
I also recommend you have some baby wipes/sanitary wipes on hand. They are a bit more expensive and can take up space if you live in a small house or apartment.
Having a stock of toilet paper is also not a bad idea BUT what I like the best are the sanitary wipes in the form of a tablet (looks exactly like a white peppermint). They are wonderful, and Im still baffled as to why they are not advertised. All you have to do is add a few drops of water on them, and they magically transform into something similar to a baby wipe. The Olight M2R Warrior tactical flashlight is my second flashlight from Olight. I’ve only had this torch for a couple of weeks, and it’s already becoming my favorite flashlight from Olight, and it’s competitors. I think Olight nailed it with this flashlight. The M2R Warrior’s output is right in the range where the High Mode (700 Lumen) is bright enough for most situations. However, if needed, you have direct access to the 1,500 Lumen Turbo Mode via that new tail button.
The user interface is the best part of the M2R Warrior. Primarily through the side switch, one click goes on, then hold to cycle through power levels. Long hold for moonlight. Double click goes to highest power (but not turbo) Tailswitch gives you turbo, or a strobe if switched to tactical mode. Three clicks for strobe.
It was tough for me to not place the Olight M2R Warrior as our runner-up. The only reason it’s not my top pick is because of the higher price point. This flashlight is nearly double the cost of the ThruNite, which however should not deter you from passing on this flashlight.
As you can see from the video below, someone (not me) beat the living crap out of this tactical flashlight, and it never wavered. It’s also waterproof, but make sure the magnetic tail is dry before placing it on the charger.

I didn’t think I would ever say this about a keychain flashlight, but this could replace your typical tactical flashlight for some people. The build is solid stainless steel and not a cheap aluminum alloy.
The big selling point for this EDC flashlight is the brightness of the light. 550 Lumens on something this small is remarkable, and yes, it will blind you if you look directly into it! Another great feature is that there’s and an actual button for the on/off and cycling through the brightness levels. One thing they did well is the fact that this button functions in a way so you won’t accidentally turn the light on in your pocket or purse and ending up with a dead battery.

4 – Wowtac BSS V3 Tactical Flashlight
Number 4 on my list is the Wowtac BSS V3 Tactical Flashlight. I wrote an entire article and review about this torch explaining how good it is for the price.
After buying my fair share of ten dollar tactical flashlights, I can say that this is one of the best one I’ve owned at the 50 dollar range. Just remember, you often get what you pay for, and that’s no different with survival gear such as this. Frankly put, at around 50 bucks, with a rechargeable battery with micro USB plugin directly on the battery, like this one, you won’t be able to beat this flashlight with any other flashlights on the market for durability, power, and function.
I made a call out on a few forums, two of which are on Reddit asking regular people like you and me what their favorite flashlight are and why.
I wanted this top tactical flashlight of 2018 to be different than all the others out there. Here are the favorite tactical flashlights from regular survivalist. This list is in no particular order since I personally have never tried any of these flashlights.
1 – Bushnell Pro High-Performance Rechargeable Flashlight (225L)
Sacomwilcox from Reddit favors the Bushnell Pro High-Performance Rechargeable Flashlight. Here is what he has to say about it.
“I currently run a Bushnell Pro 225L, it’s pretty good. Good gnurling, solid clip, good battery life, lockout switch is nice. I’ll probably stick with these until they stop making them. A neat design choice is the clip is keyed to stay in one direction and that direction lines it up in a valley between two rows of the gnurling. 2 – Streamlight 88031 ProTac 2L
VXMerlinXv from Reddit chose the Streamlight 88031 ProTac 2L as his go-to tact light. At the time of writing this article, this flashlight is an official “Amazon Choice.” The reviews are hugely in favor of it as well. Here is what “vxmerlinxv” had to say.
I’ve got two. The streamlight protac 2L which has high and low settings, and a 600 lumen kit in a surefire 6P. I understand the battery concern, but I use enough 123’s that I’ve consistently got a 12 pack I’m working through and a 12 pack in reserve. I also use a black diamond headlamp, using AAA’s like all of my family’s headlamps.

Flashlights to Avoid at ALL COST!!!
Ok, maybe you don’t need to avoid these flashlights at all cost, but you should think twice before buying a torch such as the one in the picture; especially if you paid more than 5 dollars. Yes, I said 5 dollars!
Amazon sellers have sent me many of these cheap flashlights, but the kicker is, their not even THAT cheap! Some sellers on Amazon sells these flashlights for twenty dollars. Some of these flashlights are complete garbage and will break apart in your hand. Others are not as bad, but the simple fact is that for the money they charge for these flashlights, you can do better with just a bit of research. If you can find some for 5 dollars, then that might not be such a bad deal.

You can also try to distract the dog by throwing something in hopes that they will fetch it for you. Walk away slowly without making any sudden moves.

If you’re facing a dangerous situation behind the wheel, the correct seating position will allow you to react much faster. You should adjust your posture so your back is pressing against the seat and that your legs should almost be straight while pressing on the brakes. The positioning of your head should be nearly vertical, and your wrist should rest freely on the steering wheel at the ten and two o’clock positions. The steering wheel shouldn’t cover the dashboard, and your mirrors should always be adjusted, so you have the optimal vision from behind. When the appendix is inflamed, the pain will increase if you lay on a hard surface and raise your legs and then lower them sharply. The first thing you should do is face the earth, arch your back, stretch your arms and fold your knees and elbows. Doing this will provide you a bit more stability and increase your drag resulting in slowing you down and being able to steer yourself through the air. Now that you’re ready to control your trajectory look for a safe place to land including snow, freshly tilled fields and especially, sloping hills. Forest and thick brush can also be ok but will increase your chances of being impaled. Avoid water, rocks, and concrete because this would be the hardest surfaces you could fall on. In the end, relax your body and position yourself in a vertical position and enjoy your life flashing before your eyes. Another survival tip that could save your life that we all hope to never have to use! What a way to go!
#61- Escaping a Burning House
We all learn about fire safety in school, and we all seem to know what to do yet thousands of people die in a house or building fires every year.
This first survival tip is to have working smoke detectors and have an escape pre-planned. Step number two is to follow these steps if you’re caught in a house fire. Get out of the house as safely and as quickly as possible by staying low to the ground and if possible, have a wet cloth to place over your mouth and nose. Make sure to feel the doors before opening them to ensure their not hot and that you’re not going to be face to face with the fire. If you’re going to escape from a window, you will need to shut the room door behind you so you’re not creating a surge of air that would result in a massive fire surge. Lastly, if you’re successful in escaping the burning house, do NOT go back in!
#62- Don’t Do This with an Aggressive Dog!
If you’re facing an aggressive dog, one thing you should never do is to show your teeth by smiling. Smiling to a dog is like giving the middle finger to a human and the dog will take it as an ultimate aggression and will most likely attack you because of it. Just remember, DO NOT SMILE, even if you’re nervous.
#63- Quick Way to Avoid a Nuclear Shockwave
If you’re witnessing a nuclear explosion a few miles/km away, you will have to immediately get to a safe area to avoid the initial shockwave. If you’re in the wilderness, try to find a ditch and huddle inside it. A shovel will prove useful if you have one with you so you can dig yourself a trench as fast as you can and hide to avoid the dangerous shockwave.
#64- Last Minute Way to Avoid Most of The Nuclear Radiation
If did not prepare yourself for a nuclear attack, there are still some last minute things you can do to protect yourself. If you realize that an atomic bomb is detonating near your location, then you need to act fast to avoid massive radiation poisoning. Quickly go to the middle of your house and build the thickest fort you can with the furniture in the room. Use anything to cover yourself and have as many layers on you to try to avoid the initial wave of radiation.

If you’re out in the open, there is no chance that they will not see you from a search and rescue helicopter. This is a survival thacks that would be very useful to someone lost in the wilderness at night!

If our robotic creation decided to exterminate every one of their gods (I’m talking about us when I say god’s, you knew that right?) you need to stay off the grid. The only way to survive this is to disappear for good by staying offline and living entirely off the grid and have a self-sufficient life. Either way, you’ll eventually be found and killed, sorry.
#67- Personal Water Filters are CHEAP! BUY ONE!
In recent years I’ve come to realize that carrying water while on a wilderness trek is no longer a survival necessity. You can now buy personal water filters like the LifeStrawand the Sawyer for approximately twenty-five dollars. These survival gadgets transform almost any source of water into clean and safe drinking water. If that’s not a great survival tip, then I don’t know what is!
#68- Your Bras can Save Your Life!
If you’re in a house or building that’s on fire, and the smoke makes it hard for you to breath, transform your bras into a respirator. If you ‘re wearing bras, take it off and fold it, so both cups are now doubling as one thick cup. Place the cup of the bra over your mouth and nose creating a makeshift respirator.
#69- Aluminum Foil to Replace a Battery!
We’ve mentioned a few times that carrying some aluminum foil with you in your survival pack is a useful tip that can also transform into a battery. If you lose a battery and now only have one cell to power a two battery position flashlight, you can use some foil to overcome this obstacle. Cut a piece of aluminum foil the same length of a battery and roll it, so it’s almost as thick as the battery your matting it with. Place the battery and the rolled up foil in the flashlight, and you should now have a temporary working flashlight to get you out a jam.
#70- Nail Polish and Matches
Nail polish can be used to prevent your matches from becoming useless after being contaminated with water. Paint the top half of the matches with nail polish creating a flammable yet waterproof barrier between the igniter and water. Works every time!
#71- Survival Tips To Getting out of Restraints made from Zip Ties
There’s a great survival tips if someone kidnaps you and tie your hands together with zip ties. Grab the end of the zip tie with your mouth and pull as hard as you can to tighten them. You will be able to set yourself free by spreading your arms in a fast jerking motion.
#72- Strengthening Windows From Hurricanes
You will need to strengthen your windows, so they don’t shatter all over the place in case of an oncoming hurricane. If you didn’t have the resources to board your windows, you could strengthen them by using duct tape. Tape all four sides of the window and the tape from corner to corner creating an X. Doing this could prevent severe injuries if the window shattered.
#73- Breaking a Lock
Look for a couple of wrenches if you’re being held captive and a padlock is used to lock you in a room. Hitting the lock with a wrench will prove useless, but you can use two wrenches to break the latch easily. Place both wrenches in the loop of the padlock with one tip on the inside and one tip on the outside of each wrench and then separate two inner tips in a motion that would be like closing a pair of plyers.
#74- Another Way to Filter Water
Another way to filter water is by cutting the bottom off a plastic bottle and wrapping a cloth around the opening (the other end). Place the plastic bottle upside down and fill it with charcoal, sand, stones, more sand, and more stones. This layered combination is all you need to filter your water, just do not forget to boil it since the filtration process will not kill bacteria.

Crocodiles are clumsy creatures and running away from them can be very successful if done the right way. Run away from the Crocodile using zigzag movements since they will have trouble turning and will end up slowing them down considerably.

Eating snow when thirsty will not rehydrate you and will only cause your body to become colder and use more energy to keep you warm. Always melt the snow before drinking it, and it’s not a bad idea to warm it up a bit if you can if you’re trying to survive in sub-zero temperatures.

If you find yourself with a deep wound resulting from a piece of glass, do not pull it out. Get medical attention as soon as possible and be careful not to move the object because you could cause irreversible damage. Birch bark powder is an excellent fuel to quickly and easily ignite your fire. You can make birch bark powder by scrapping the inside of the bark with a sharp knife. This is an easy survival hack that anyone could learn how to do, with a sharp knife of course.

While trekking in the wilderness, you might walk by bird feathers without giving it much thought. These feathers can be used as fuel since they are easily ignitable with a single spark. Pick up the fallen feathers and place them in a ziplock bag in case you need some dry tinder along your travels.
#83- Condoms Survival Hacks
A good condom survival hacks can be used for things other than lovemaking; they can also be used to carry water while in the wilderness. A pack of condoms takes little to no space in your survival pack and will hold a significant amount of water. Make sure the condoms are unscented and unlubricated.

Another great way to collect water is through the moss. If there was a recent rainfall and you’re in need of water, find some moss and squeeze out the water inside it. Waterproofing your matches isn’t the only thing you should keep away from water, you should waterproof your compass as well. If these even a single drop of water that makes its way into your compass it could make the needle stick and give you an inaccurate reading.
#86- Boiling Water in Aluminum Foil
Another excellent aluminum foil tip is to use it as a canteen for boiling water. Grab a piece of foiling the size of a square foot and place your fist in the center and wrap the sides around your arm creating a bowl. Pour some water into your foil Boal and set it by the fire to bring the water to a boil.
#87- Building a Fire Reflector Wall from your Space Blanket
You can make use of your reflective space blanket by using it as a fire reflector wall to make sure you get the most out of the heat from your fire. Wrap the edges of the space blanket around two stakes and drive it into the ground next to your fire. The fire reflector wall will make it, so you’re not losing as much heat due to the wind.

Building a fire reflector wall out of natural material is quite simple since all you need are things you will most likely be items surrounding you in the wilderness. Crab apples, which are also known as wild apples, are fruits that are tangy and tart. They look beautiful with their pink or red skins. Unripe crab apples can even cure wounds. Place the fruit on the open wound to help it close and heal faster. Meanwhile, ripe crab apples can be useful for your digestive system and can help prevent piles and diarrhea.
#91- Charcoal to Prevent Snow Blindness
Snow blindness is a painful, temporary loss of vision due to overexposure to the sun’s UV rays. The medical term for snow blindness is photokeratitis. Essentially, snow blindness is caused by a sunburned eye — or more specifically, a sunburned cornea. If you don’t have any UV protected goggles or glasses you can prevent snow blindness by smearing some charcoal under your eyes; it also absorbs a lot of light.
#92-Survival Hacks Duct Tape Or Birch Bark to Prevent Snow Blindness
You can also make an ancient pair of goggles using birch bark. The Native Americans used to make these to prevent snow blindness by cutting some bark in the shape of glasses and slicing two small rectangular eye holes. You can also make snow goggles using duct tape or other material around you. Using a little twig to keep the goggles on your face is a remarkable fashion statement in the wilderness! #93- Pain Relieving Willow Bark
Stripping the inner bark of a willow tree then steeping it in water or chewing on it will provide you with an efficient way to help you alleviate the cold and flu symptoms and is also an active pain reliever. The bark of white willow contains salicin, which is a chemical similar to aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid). In combination with the herb’s potent anti-inflammatory plant compounds (called flavonoids), salicin is thought to be responsible for the pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects of the herb.
#94- Bring Some Trash Bags with you in the Wilderness
Bringing a few trash bags with you and stuffing them in your survival backpack is worth its weight in gold and will take very little space. You can use a trash bag to collect all sorts of dry tinder in the event of an oncoming rainfall. You can also transform a trash bag into an emergency shelter, ponchos, and many more useful things by using your imagination.
#95- Always Have a Bandana With You in the Wilderness
You should never overlook the importance of carrying a bandana on your travels through the wilderness. I always carry a bandana, but you’ll never see me wearing one because of the different things you can use it for. You can use the bandana as a tourniquet, bandage, water filter, sunshade, firewood carrier and a bug net. You’ll realize just how useful these things are and they are weightless and take little space in your survival backpack.
#96- Reflective Blacket to Keep you Cool
You can use a reflective blanket not only to keep you warm but to also keep you cool under the hot sun. Placing the reflective side facing outwards will reflect the suns heat outwards and keep everything underneath the blanket a bit cooler.
#97- Survival Condom Hacks as an Ignition
You can use a condom to ignite dry tinder on a sunny day by filling it up with water and using it as a magnifying glass under the hot sun. Let’s just say that there are many survival hacks regarding condoms.
#98- Toilet Paper Protector / Holder
One thing you won’t want to lose due to wet weather is your toilet paper. Using dry pine cones to wipe your butt is no fun at all so you will want to keep your toilet paper dry by placing it into an old coffee can and slicing a line the width of the tissue.
#99- Do NOT Spread the Word
Don’t brag and advertise around your neighborhood that you’re building an emergency shelter in case of a crisis. If people know about your secret shelter, It won’t be too long until you have dozens of people knocking at your door and using up all the resources you would typically have kept for you and your family. Only tell the people you would want to help or that you can afford to help. This is a very important SHTF survival Tip.
#100- Load up on Survival Books
If you buy survival books, it would be a great habit to place them in your emergency shelter after you’re done reading them. This way if there is a crisis you will have a lot of information at your fingertips. If you read books on an e-reader, you should never delete your survival books since they take little space and you can always have them with you in case an emergency situation should arise.
#101- Prepare for Multiple Emergency Events
An enormous amount of “survivalist” will only prepare for specific disasters they think would just be the ones that would affect them. Some will only prepare for hurricanes while others would prepare for significant power outages. If you’re going through the process of building an emergency shelter, you should prepare for not only one disaster but multiple disasters. You never know what unknown crisis could be coming your way. Finally, my last survival tip for you is NEVER to place all your eggs in one basket.
